What does the Bible say about waist beads or Anklets?
However, no place in the Bible mentions wearing waist beads and their significance.
Waist beads are accessories made with strings and beads which most women wear on their waist for different purposes. The fashion is typical in West Africa, especially in Nigeria and Ghana.
Most individuals enjoy relating everything in life with spirituality. Including fashion sense and other modes of livelihood. Although it is not wrong to be highly spiritual, condemning some inventions and manmade crafts is wrong.
God has made man intelligent and given us the power to be innovative and creative just like he is. The biblical phrase that “God created man in his image and likeness…” It has so many meanings if we are to break it down further.
Man is expected to be just like God in wisdom and in the ability to invent objects, technologies, and other things that will make man’s standard of living accurate and comfortable. Relating this to waist beads, this accessory is crafted by men for beautification and other body-related usages.
Nevertheless, the scriptures have warned us to be careful of our fathers’ fetish practices and old traditional beliefs. Christianity has changed many old beliefs as the gospel of Jesus Christ has come to enlighten us more on the things that are invariably true and acceptable by God.
What does the Bible say about waist beads or Anklets?
The scriptures in the book of Leviticus 18:30 say, “Therefore shall ye keep mine ordinance, that ye commit not any one of these abominable customs, which were committed before you, and that ye defile not yourselves therein: I am the Lord your God.”
Also, In the book of 2 Thessalonians chapter 2, verse 15, the Bible said, “Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.”
In both scriptures, we can learn to hold on to our good old traditions and abstain from the bad traditions that do not glorify God.
However, still speaking of waist beads, many cultures today have adopted the fashion, and the trend has gone viral, especially for African women. They wear it for several reasons, which include;
- Beautification
- Weight check
- Representing their culture
- Seduction
- Boosting confidence
And many more. For whatever reason, women wear waist beads; there is still no place in the Bible that has condemned the fashion.
However, the Bible has encouraged us that we are expected to dress modestly at all times as children of God. And always appear in a manner the Holy Ghost can commune and dwell with us constantly. In 1 Corinthians chapter 7, verse number 31 and I quote. “And they that use this world, as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away.”
The keyword there is “Abuse.” that passage encourages us not to abuse the use of fashion or get carried away by the trending fashions of the world, for they will surely pass away. The Bible did not say we should not engage in fashion or condemn fashion trends but has advised that we do not abuse it or make it the most priority, thereby neglecting the things of the Lord.
In the real sense, fashion comes and goes. Every year that passes by has one vogue or trend that passed with it; new fashions are coming up every day. Therefore we shouldn’t get carried away by any fashion season but pay more attention to the things that can never pass away, which are the word of God and the kingdom of God.
Dear reader, wearing waist beads could be wrong according to personal perceptions but let’s not relate it religiously or to Christianity because the Bible has not condemned the usage.
In the book of 1 Timothy, chapter 2, verse number 9 and I quote
“In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety, not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;.”
So as a Christian woman, if you’re curious about knowing how the Lord wants you to appear regarding fashion, then I think you should study the above-quoted scriptures very well (1 Timothy 2:9).
In conclusion, the Bible has not condemned wearing waist beads but has encouraged that we appear modestly in dressing at all times. Thanks for reading!
